Where skill makes a difference
Poker
Against other players the casino takes a rake, not an edge, so a better player can win over time. Casino poker against the dealer (Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker) is a fixed-odds game with an edge of roughly 2% to 3% when played correctly.
Blackjack
Basic strategy cuts the edge to around 0.5% on good rules. Check the payout on blackjack: 3:2 is standard, 6:5 roughly triples the edge. Card counting is of little use online because shoes are reshuffled often.
Video poker
Jacks or Better on a 9/6 paytable returns 99.5% with correct holds; the 8/5 version returns about 97.3%. The difference is in the paytable, so read it before you play.
Games with more decisions
| Game | Best bet | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Craps | Pass or don't pass with odds | 1.41% / 1.36% on the line bet |
| Pai gow poker | Splitting the hand correctly | about 2.5% including commission |
| Sic bo | Big or small | 2.78% |
| Baccarat | Banker | 1.06% |
Betting systems such as the Martingale change how wins and losses are spread, not the edge. Against a table maximum they turn a long losing run into one large loss.
How experienced players protect a bankroll
- Size a session at 50 to 100 base bets, so normal swings do not end it early.
- Keep side bets to a small share of the stake; most carry edges of 5% or more.
- Track results per game, not per session, to see what each costs you.
- Use the casino's loss limits even if you trust your discipline.
