1. Not checking the licence
A licence number in the footer means little until you find it on the regulator's own register. Check that the domain you are on is listed and that the licence is active. If you cannot find it, do not deposit.
2. Not reading the bonus terms
- Wagering: R1,000 at 40x the bonus is R40,000 of bets.
- Game weighting: table games often count 10% or nothing.
- Expiry: short windows push you into longer sessions.
- Win caps: some offers limit what you can withdraw from bonus play.
Our guide to casino terms walks through the clauses that matter.
3. Playing without a budget
Decide what you can lose in a month, set it as a deposit limit in the account, and stop when it is gone. Without a number written down, losses are easy to chase.
4. Ignoring RTP and volatility
A slot with 96% RTP returns R96 of every R100 wagered over the long run, but a high-volatility slot can take your whole session budget before it pays. If you want a session to last, choose lower volatility and a lower stake.
5. Skipping the safety tools
Deposit limits, reality checks and time-outs only work if you switch them on, and the best time is when you open the account.
6. Not using support
Ask support before you deposit: how long withdrawals take to a South African bank, which methods pay out and what documents they need. The answers, and how quickly they come, tell you a lot about a new casino.
