Which games allow skill to win
| Game | Long-run result for a strong player |
|---|---|
| Poker cash games and tournaments | Can win; the house takes a rake |
| Blackjack, basic strategy | Small loss, about 0.5% of stakes |
| Video poker, full pay | Small loss, about 0.5% of stakes |
| Roulette, slots, baccarat | Loss at the house edge; skill changes nothing |
Bankroll rules that serious players use
- Keep gambling money separate from household money.
- Bet no more than 1% to 2% of the bankroll on one hand or spin.
- Track every session in a spreadsheet: date, game, stake, result.
- Stop raising stakes after losses; move down instead.
Emotion and tilt
Tilt is playing worse after a bad beat or a losing run. Set a rule you follow automatically, such as ending the session after two big losses in a row or after any loss over a set amount. Big wins need a rule too: cash out a share before you play on.
Bonuses are not income
Clearing a bonus at 35 times costs about 3.5 times the bonus in expected losses on a 4% edge game. Only offers with low wagering, a high game weighting and no win cap can come out ahead on average, and casinos close accounts they see as bonus hunting.
If it stops being fun
Treating casino games as a job is one of the warning signs listed on our addiction help page. If you are chasing an income from them, talk to someone first: the SARGF line on 0800 006 008 is free.
